Common issues:
This is a turn based game. when you are done with a phase, press c to advance the turn (and subsequent phase). the order of turns goes as follows: 13 turns of expansion and then the following three phases repeating: 1 production, 1 turn of build, 1 turn of attack (note that with no barracks in play, this phase gets skipped because it is irrelevant).
Expansion issues:
To reiterate, you can only expand over oceans and mountains 3 times.
Build issues:
MAKE SURE TO NAVIGATE TO RULES WITHIN BUILD MENU TO UNDERSTAND BUILDINGS BETTER
You can (and should) expand your empire by building outside of it (navigate the red cursor with the arrows and press select). Note that you can only build on empire tiles or tiles bordering your empire tiles (DIAGONAL DOES NOT WORK). When you cover up a resource tile, it will no longer produce.
Attack issues:
In the attack phase, the arrows will let you chose between the barracks you want to control. When you select (with x) you are then controlling the destination of the barrack you selected. if you cycle through all of the barracks before selecting, you will get to an option where they will all light up white. upon selecting, this controls the goal for all of the barracks (not just one). similarly, when all the warriors are selected, this is controlling the goal for all of the warriors.
Produce issues
Produce occurs after the attack phase, every standard pink empire will produce 1 corresponding resource to the land tiles BORDERING it. Towns will produce 2. Each barracks will produce a warrior. Each citadel will produce 7 money.
